Web Page Creation Hints and Resources - WS_FTP Configuration for Uploading Web Site Files From a Windows 95 PC to Virgin Net's Freespace

The configuration for other operating systems and for web space on other servers or other Internet Service Providers may well be different.

Profile name: As desired, for example freespace
Host name: upload.virgin.net

Note: Not freespace.virgin.net

Files will automatically be copied from upload.virgin.net to freespace.virgin.net without you having to do anything.

Host type: UNIX (Standard)
User ID: Your username without the "@virgin.net" suffix, for example joe.bloggs
Password: Your Virgin Net password, echoed as asterisks for security
Account: Leave this field blank
Initial directory - remote host: Leave this field blank
Initial directory - local PC: Set this field to the top directory of the copy of your web site on your PC
Comment: Leave this field blank
Anonymous Login: Empty box (no tick, i.e. disabled)
Save Password: Tick (i.e. enabled)
Auto Save Config: Tick (i.e. enabled)
Advanced Options: Leave these fields at their default values: Connection Retry 0, Network Timeout 65, Remote Port 21, all other fields blank, disabled or greyed out

If desired, select the relevant option in WS_FTP so as to move toolbar buttons to the top of the screen.

In WS_FTP, change the default directory on the local computer (i.e. on your PC) to the top directory of your web site files.

By default, WS_FTP should go to the DOCS directory of your Freespace area, which is where all your HTM files and graphics files should be copied to. There are files in other directories of your Freespace area which should not be disturbed.

There is an option in WS_FTP to enable a log file, WS_FTP.LOG. Individual log files are written to each directory from which files are uploaded detailing the operations performed with dates and times. This provides useful diagnostic evidence if you are encountering problems but for normal operation is best left disabled.

There is an option in WS_FTP to enable debug mode, which produces many more messages in the status window. Again, this provides useful diagnostic information if you are encountering problems but for normal operation is best left disabled.

On a Windows 95 PC WS_FTP should automatically bring up the modem "Connect/Cancel" dialog box when it senses the need to connect via the modem. On a Windows V3.1 PC you may need to start the dialler and/or Netscape Navigator beforehand, to avoid WS_FTP trying to connect by means of Winsock.

If you are a Virgin Net subscriber, have tried the above settings and are still failing to connect to your Freespace area with WS_FTP, then you might like to give Virgin a ring (or drop them an EMail) and ask them to check that your Freespace password is in line with your normal logging on password, as it should be. Sometimes the two passwords can become different, especially after a password change. This is the most likely cause of being unable to connect with WS_FTP but there are of course other possibilities. Similar problems can occur if you change your user name.
