About The Author
I live near the city of Norwich in the county of Norfolk in England. Norwich is about a hundred miles northeast of London. I am retired and not connected with any company or organisation, except as a customer of course.
As a pupil and student I went to Forest Grammar School in Winnersh near Reading in Berkshire, Salford University near Manchester for a BSc in Electronics and Keele University near Stoke on Trent for a Post Graduate Certificate in Education. I taught Maths and Computer Studies at Sandhurst Comprehensive School in Berkshire and at Blyth-Jex School in Norwich between 1973 and 1979. I worked in IT as a programmer and later in user support in the Rowntree-Mackintosh, later Nestlé, factory in Norwich from 1979 until it was closed down in 1997. I've used an Elliott 405, an ICL KDF9, a DEC PDP-8, a Commodore PET, a DEC PDP-11, a Commodore 64, a DEC VAX and various Intel/DOS/Windows PC's. I've visited the USA for almost all of my summer holidays since 1980, in some years also visiting Canada.
General Comments
This is a personal, non-commercial web site, run as a hobby. It contains no advertisements and sells no products or services.
All the pages of this web site are suitable for children of all ages. However, I obviously cannot guarantee whether the same is true for other web sites to which this site links.
Unless otherwise stated all recommendations on this personal web site are entirely the opinions of the author, who has no connection with any of the companies or organisations mentioned other than as an actual or potential customer or user.

Technical Matters - Browser Requirements, etc
- These pages have been optimised for the Netscape Navigator V3.0 web browser. Except for a few extremely minor layout errors they will also be displayed correctly by Netscape Navigator V2.0, Netscape Navigator V4.0, Netscape Communicator V4.0, Netscape Communicator V4.6, Microsoft Internet Explorer V2.0, Microsoft Internet Explorer V3.0, Microsoft Internet Explorer V4/V4.01, Microsoft Internet Explorer V5 and the Opera browser. Operation on other web browsers is not guaranteed but should generally be ok. I have tried to keep things as simple as possible and to avoid HTML tags and web page features which may not be available on some older browsers, or which only work in Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator.
- The pages on this site have been designed to load as quickly as possible with the absolute minimum of graphics.
- Text pages are best viewed with at least 256 colours. Text colours have been chosen from the non-dithering 00/33/66/CC/FF palette. Pages should be displayed adequately at all reasonable screen resolutions and font sizes. On pages with wide tables you may wish to select a higher resolution and/or smaller font.
- The photographs are best viewed with as many colours as possible, preferably TrueColour (16.7 million colours, 24 or 32 bits).
- This site does not use frames.
- This site does not have any animated GIF images.
- This site does not use Java.
- This site does not use JavaScript.
- This site does not use Visual BASIC Script.
- This site does not use Shockwave or any other plug-ins.
- This site does not have any audio.
- This site will not load pages with large images without prior warning (unless you open them directly of course).
- All text on this site is real text. No text is loaded as an image. All text effects are created by means of HTML tags. This makes pages load quicker and also has the advantage that an entire text page can be saved by means of a single command.
- All the pages are true HTM files. There are no CGI or ASP pages created automatically. However, some of the HTML on a few pages is created by means of JavaScript as described previously. The overall index page of the USA and Canada Holiday Hints section was created automatically by means of a QBASIC program before being uploaded to the server.
- If you're interested, I use a shareware improved Notepad-like program called EditPad to create and maintain the HTM files, LView and Kai's PhotoSoap to process the images and Ipswitch's WS_FTP program to upload the files to the server. I use a collection of QBASIC programs that I wrote myself to check HTML syntax, links, etc. I import the text into Microsoft Word for spell checking.
- This site does not have any background images.
- This site does not have any advertisements.
- This site has no products or services on sale.
- This site is a hobby, not a business.
Spelling
Because I live in Britain I tend to use British spelling, not American spelling.
I spell "program" that way when referring to computer software since that has for many years now been the official British spelling for that meaning. A television programme is spelt the British way though.
However, I tend to spell disk with a k not a c, especially when referring to computer media. Disk is the American spelling, disc is the British spelling.
Feedback Summary - Number Of Email Messages By Country, State And Province
The following table indicates the number of feedback email messages I have received from each country and from each American state and Canadian province since the site was put online in May 1997. In some cases the most likely country, state or province has been selected, based either on the subject of the message or its time stamp relative to GMT. Each correspondent is only noted once in this table.
